New colour knits
I have been wearing the hat of much blue-ness over the last few days, every time I have popped out on errands, piling what might otherwise be messy hair inside and out of sight. Ah, hats, the lazy/busy person’s friend.
I don’t know if I like the colour, still, but I can appreciate that I don’t look terrible in it. I appreciate all of the comments saying that it compliments my eyes. I am actually quite surprised. A child of the 80s, all of the received wisdom of my youth insisted that you should never wear blue eyeshadow with blue eyes (not that I wanted to wear blue make-up) and somehow I assumed that blue was a general no-no with my colouring.
After my last post, I decided to Google around and refresh myself on the current wisdom surrounding colour analysis. Now, I don’t generally care what colours someone suggests I should wear, as I generally wear any colour (except blue
), but the results were interesting. According to this resource I am a winter (which is what I had assumed) under the subset ‘clear winter’, and these are the suggested colours:

A few of the fuschias and the brighter purple I just do not like, but on the bottom row, second from the right, is my hat. Some of my favourite colours are definitely missing – I love sage and lime greens, dusky pinks and various other colours, which I will of course still wear, and I’m also hoping that I don’t look awful in the new hat that I am writing a pattern for, in honey yellow.

warm yellow, warm hat
I guess the obvious thing is to wear the colours you enjoy, but try new things from time to time, even if you end up throwing them off in disgust in the fitting room.

I think i prefer your colour suggestions to mine. I’m apparently an autumn (dark hair which is currently purple, olive skin and brown eyes). Some of the colours I wear and are ok but it has suggested mint green and peach which are my least favourite colours ever! I like bright colours but tend to wear dark ones, I’ve just ordered a new bright purple/pink raincoat though to bring me out of my comfort zone.
The yarn you are knitting your hat with is gorgeous, same colour as my tea mug.
There’s a definite difference between being blue-eyed and wearing a blue hat and being blue-eyed and wearing blue eyeshadow and the blue hat really does suit you. Looking at the yellow new one, I’m envious!! Gorgeous colour, yet I’m a strawberry-blonde with freckles and that colour is a certain no-no for me!
Now I’m off to learn about -my- colours!! ;)
Way cute hat! I will eagerly awaiting the pattern
I never really like the colors that are suggested for me either. While I maybe look good in pastels with my blonde hair and pinkish undertones in my skin…I pretty much hate them. I agree, wear what makes you feel good…and don’t be afraid to step out of your normal comfort zone…because I thought you looked great in your blue hat.
I love the new hat! I love the color too. I have never seen anyone look bad in that shade of yellow. The good thing about a hat is that it’s just a touch of color. You might not want to wear that shade head to toe, but you can have fun with it in a hat.
I’m looking forward to the pattern. Now off to check out my colors.
Oooh gorgeous hat! I love that yellow too. I just checked my colours & apparently I’m a “soft summer” – luckily the colours listed make up the main components of my wardrobe, UNluckily that means I don’t have an excuse to do more shopping. hmph! Xx
What a beautiful yellow! Reminds me of daffodils and springtime!
It’s funny how wide the categories are, really, since I’m a clear winter, also (though slowly cooling as my hair becomes increasingly salt and peppered) and I love the bright fuchsias and purples, along with bright reds and blues. Yellow, however, makes me look ill!
I tried looking into this in August 2008 (according to my blog) and I’ve actually found it pretty useful to have a list of the colours that suit me. Once I really looked at the list I found that my favourite clothes that I felt the best in did fit the profile and I’ve tried to stick vaguely to the idea when buying clothes. It is strangely more difficult when buying yarn as it is easier to think ‘Ooh pretty colour’ without thinking it through but I do try.
And it doesn’t stop you buying lurid sock yarn
I have never felt comfortable with the “seasonal” colours. According to that site, I am a winter skinned, august haired. What? Everyone is just unique, and in your case that blue definitely compliments your eyes!
your last sentence is spot on – apart from anything else, if you like the colour you’re wearing, you’ll FEEL happy so you’ll LOOK happy
and you’re right about trying new colours – i’m surprised every now and again when i wear a sage or a peach and look good.
also that hat looks VERY exciting! is it going to be a cap/fitted style or a loose/tam-ish style?
Really, you should never wear blue eyeshadow with ANYTHING.
